Actress Priyanka Chopra got candid on how grateful she was to be able to use a surrogate to welcome her and husband Nick Jonas’s daughter Malti Marie, who just celebrated her first birthday, reported Eonline.com.
Priyanka Chopra is reflecting on her journey to motherhood.
The Quantico alum got candid about using a surrogate to welcome daughter Malti Marie with husband Nick Jonas last year, explaining how her health prevented her from carrying her child herself.
“I had medical complications,” Priyanka shared for the February cover story of British Vogue. “This was a necessary step, and I’m so grateful I was in a position where I could do this. Our surrogate was so generous, kind, lovely and funny, and she took care of this precious gift for us for six months.”
The 40-year-old also addressed those who criticized her decision to use a surrogate.
“You don’t know me,” she continued. “You don’t know what I’ve been through. And just because I don’t want to make my medical history, or my daughter’s, public doesn’t give you the right to make up whatever the reasons were.”
Priyanka went on the explain that Malti, who just celebrated her first birthday Jan. 15, had to be delivered a full trimester before her due date.
“I was in the OR when she came out,” the Baywatch actress noted. “She was so small, smaller than my hand. I saw what the intensive-care nurses do. They do God’s work. Nick and I were both standing there as they intubated her. I don’t know how they even found what they needed in her tiny body to intubate her.”
And although Priyanka and the “Jealous” singer keep their daughter out of the public eye by covering her face in photos, they have given glimpses of major milestones from her first year. In fact, over the holidays, the White Tiger star gave followers a glimpse at their family’s celebrations.
“Perfect winter days,” Priyanka captioned her December Instagram post showing a slideshow of snapshots of the trio—including one of Priyanka holding a bundled up Malti during a stroll. “Ps: 1st pic- hubby is really interested in my mirror selfie.”
